Go Life lights up Voortrekker Monument for Diabetes Awareness Month!
Pieter Cloete, marketing manager of Go Life Health Products, together with Abbott, the Community Pharmacist Sector (CPS) of the PSSA and Diabetes SA, has decided to take it upon themselves to actively promote diabetes awareness in South Africa during the month of November, which is international Diabetes Awareness Month. During this month, 14 November will also be highlighted as World Diabetes Day.
Ahead of World Diabetes Day, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) President Professor Jean Claude Mbanya called for increased health promotion and political action in the face of the epidemic. “Diabetes is claiming millions of lives each year,” he said. “It is ravaging communities and threatening economies. We must improve care and stop the many millions at risk from developing the disease.”
Celebrated every year, World Diabetes Day is a campaign led by the IDF and its more than 200 member associations in over 160 countries and territories. Created by IDF and the World Health Organization in 1991, World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007 thanks to a UN resolution that calls on all member states to organise events to mark the day.
This year sees the first of a five-year campaign that addresses the growing need for diabetes education and prevention programmes to tackle diabetes and its life-threatening complications. The World Diabetes Day campaign aims to establish access to diabetes education as a right for all people with diabetes, to promote greater awareness of the risk factors and warning signs of diabetes, and encourage best-practice sharing in diabetes prevention.
The IDF called on all countries to mark World Diabetes Day and increase diabetes awareness by lighting monuments around the world in blue - the colour of the blue circle, the global symbol for diabetes.
More than 400 monuments and iconic buildings have already confirmed participation in November. They include Table Mountain in South Africa, the London Eye in the United Kingdom, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, Tokyo Tower in Japan and many more. Across Japan close to 60 monuments will light in blue; 82 will light in Argentina, 34 in Kazakhstan and 21 in the USA.
One of the initiatives spearheaded by Pieter from Go Life and Jeanne–Marie, area consultant for Abbott, towards diabetes awareness in South Africa will therefore be to adhere to the call from the IDF, and lighting the well-known Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria in blue. Their joint efforts arranged for a sponsorship from Osram, who will provide the lights needed to turn the Voortrekker Monument into a “blue beacon for diabetes awareness”.
In addition to the lightings, hundreds of events will take place worldwide to mark the day; from free individual diabetes testing, to regional events such as the Pan-African meeting in Mauritius that will see the launch of an African Declaration on diabetes.
So if you drive past a bizarre big blue object where the Voortrekker Monument used to be…. it is not a commemorative sculpture in honour of the success of the Blue Bulls in 2009… no… it is still the Voortrekker Monument… in blue… Diabetes Awareness blue!
And remember… in November… blue has nothing to do with rugby anymore… not even in Pretoria! Get yourself tested for Diabetes!
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month!
Go Life Health Products in association with Diabetes South Africa, Pharma SA and Shoprite Checkers MediRite Pharmacies will be offering affordable testing in most major pharmacies across South Africa.
According to statistics from Diabetes SA, we currently have approximatly 6.5 Million diabetics in South Africa, only 8000 of whom are registered with Diabetes SA. Approximately 85% - 90% of all people with diabetes are Type 2, and many people who have this condition are undiagnosed!! Thus the urgent need for more active awareness!
Join us on the 14th of November 2009 and get tested! Know your status.

"GO Buddy" live on RSG!
Tune in to RSG on Tuesday, 8 September 2009 from 09:00 am! Pieter Cloete, Beatrix Hardick and Izak Straus will be live on air with hosts Martelize Brink and Johan Rademan!
Go Buddy is the ultimate care bear and will be the heartbeat of many charity projects across South Africa! Go Buddy, an adorable teddy bear, is “hitting the road” at the end of August 2009 and will travel with well-known celebrities across South Africa.
Pieter Cloete from GoLife Health products initiated the Go Buddy charity project. Go Life is a natural health products company with its roots in Knysna.
“Each celebrity (actor, politician, musician, sportsman etc.) will act as caretaker for Buddy the bear for a period of three weeks, in which they will have to complete a charity community project. And they are encouraged to get their fans involved to assist.
Thanks to the wonderful sponsorship from Codan Productions in Knysna, Buddy has recorded a DVD that will assist these celebs on how to choose and successfully launch such a project.
The idea is for the celebrity to choose a project that will really make a difference in the lives of less fortunate South Africans. Initiatives such as raising awareness and funds for a soup kitchen and helping out in the soup kitchen, organising something special for an old age home, a clean-up project in a disadvantaged community, or a home make-over for a struggling single parent are all examples of projects that would fit in perfectly with the heart and soul of Buddy the Bear and the Go Buddy project.
Beatrix Hardick and her husband Herman (better known as Jackie and Ben from Villa Rosa on KykNet) were the first caretakers of Go Buddy. Herman invited the Grade-6 pupils of the Oakhill School in Knysna to assist them in their project.
They decided to organise a “feel special” day for the occupants of a local old age home, Loeriehof. Beatrix sponsored the snacks and the Grade-6 pupils each gave a donation towards buying 80 lovely red roses for the precious senior citizens.
The folks from Loeriehof were over the moon with all the pampering and attention, and all of them had a wonderful time. “It brought a tear to my eye to see these folks, some with no family at all!” Beatrix said afterwards.
Join Go Buddy on his wonderful journey and follow him on Facebook or his soon to be launched website. Facebook search for the group “Go Buddy” or go to www.golifebuddy.co.za.
